Although our golf courses are operated by Montrose Golf Links Ltd, an independent company distinct from the Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club, the two organisations work closely together to bring you the ultimate golfing experience.
Montrose Links is recognised as one of the oldest and most historic links in Scotland. During its earliest days, the Links covered a huge expanse of land between the town and the sea, lying just 200 yards from Montrose High Street.
Whilst Montrose cannot boast the permanency of the Old Course at St. Andrews, there are still parts of the existing Championship Course which have been played over for more than 460 years.
At one stage in its history Montrose had twenty-five holes, compared to Musselburgh’s seven and Prestwick’s twelve. Although not all played on every occasion, all twenty-five were used for a unique event in 1866 which attracted Willie Park, Andrew Strath and Jamie Anderson, three players who were all Open Champions.
During the 19th century, various Open Tournaments were played at Montrose, the most notable of which was in October 1888. The field included high profile golfers such as Old Tom Morris (St Andrews), Ben Sayers (North Berwick), Willie Fernie (Troon), and Willie Park (Musselburgh).
Links fairways are enjoyable to play off, especially in the summer months when the ground is dry and fast, and the Montrose Golf Links comprises two wonderful courses in the finest tradition of golf links.
Situated along the rugged coastline of Angus in the heart of Scotland’s ‘Golf Country’, they provide a challenge for golfers of all abilities.
1562 Course (formerly ‘The Medal’)
Being the fifth oldest golf course in the world, the 1562 is widely regarded as one of the world’s ‘must play’ courses by both Scots and international golfers.
The course has been used for many important tournaments over the years including the Scottish Professional Championship in 1967 and 1970, the Scottish Amateur Championship in 1975 and the British Boys’ Championship and Internationals in 1991. The 1562 also hosted Final Qualifying for the Open Championship held at Carnoustie in 1999 and again in 2007, the World Hickory Open in 2013 and the Europro Tour in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Qualifying and free practice for the Senior Open Championship has been held on the 1562 on multiple occasions, most recently in 2024 when we were delighted to welcome multiple Major winner Gary Player into our newly refurbished clubhouse.
Broomfield Course
The key to conquering this deceptive wee course is a delicate touch and the ability to accurately control the ball from the tee. When the east wind blows, the ‘Broomie’ can be a significant challenge but, when conditions are more benign, it positively encourages low scores
A distinguishing feature is the burn which comes into play on at least five holes, crossing the fairway at the 3rd, 4th and 13th and affecting approach shots at the 5th and 12th.
Although not as challenging as the 1562 Course, the Broomfield is nevertheless a joy to play. It is most commonly used by members to test their short game, and by visitors wishing to take on the challenge of playing both courses in one day.
